Which bike should a child choose

Tricycles
They are perfect for the youngest drivers, because on such a model, because of the design features, you do not need to learn to keep your balance, and you can concentrate on mastering the basics of control and pedals. Tricycles are very stable, have a simple but solid construction. In the classic version, two wheels are installed at the back and one at the front, in the shifters it’s the opposite.

Models for children from one year old are equipped with a parent handle, safety belts (three-point or five-point), a footrest, and a number of additional accessories. Such transport is not designed for independent driving of a child, but mainly replaces a stroller on a walk. In the future, the possibility of transforming the bike as the child grows up is presented: the parent handle is removed, seat belts and footrests are removed, the hood (if it was provided in the model), and in some configurations the seat back is removed and only the seat remains, as in conventional tricycles.

Four – wheeled
When a child grows up, a tricycle becomes uninteresting to him – he does not accelerate so fast, and is not too maneuverable, and he himself becomes low and too “childish” for him. At this stage, it is worth switching from a three-wheeled model to a four-wheeled one. A pair of small-diameter side wheels in this case performs a safety function, and externally the bike resembles an ordinary adult model: it has soft rubber wheels, chain drive, brake, bicycle seat, reflectors, etc. When the child feels confident, you can remove the safety wheels and teach him to keep his balance on a two-wheeled bicycle. This model is purchased on average for children aged 4 to 7 years and height from 105 to 130 cm.
Two – wheeled
This type of bike is designed for children who have already mastered the balance perfectly, and who ride perfectly on their own, without the help and insurance of adults. A children’s two-wheeled bike differs from an adult mainly only in size, well, and design. After all, for children aged 7-8 years, there are models not only of bright sports color, but also with the image of their favorite cartoon characters, cars, animals, etc.

Child Bike Selection Parameters
Age and height
It is not worth buying a child a bicycle “for growth”, because while your child grows up to it, due to the discomfort of the subject due to the discrepancy between the growth parameters and the size of the bike, interest in this type of children’s transport can quickly disappear.

When choosing, focus on the age of the child, his height and the diameter of the wheels:

1-3 years old – height 75-95 cm – wheels up to 12 inches in diameter;
3-4 years old – height 95-101 cm – wheels with a diameter of 12 inches;
4-6 years old – height 101-115 cm – wheels size 14-16 inches;
6-9 years old – height 115-128 cm – wheels with a diameter of 18-20 inches;
9-13 years old – height 126-155 cm – wheels measuring 20-24 inches.
Also, when choosing, keep in mind that the distance in a standing position from the bicycle frame to the groin area should be from seven to ten centimeters. To choose the right length of the frame, the distance from the steering wheel to the tip of the saddle should not be more than the distance from the elbow of the child’s hand to the fingertips.

Wheel and frame material
There are three types of wheels:

Plastic – mainly used in children’s three-wheeled models, as they are not durable and loud enough;
Inflatable rubber – provide a soft ride, including off-road, but at the same time you periodically have to pump up and monitor the integrity of the cameras;
Foam rubber – soft tires do not require a camera, which frees the cyclist from the hassle of replacing after punctures. But the shock absorption is a little worse than in inflatable ones, so the irregularities will be felt more sharply.
Brakes
The type of brake should be selected according to the age of the child.

For kids, it is better to give preference to the foot brake, since the hand has not yet had time to get stronger and may not have enough strength to fully clamp the brake;
For teenagers, the brake on the steering wheel will be more relevant;
But if you could not choose what exactly your child needs, then buy a bike with combined brakes.

Soft pads on the steering wheel handles;
Reflectors and catafoats;
The shield that covers the chain and the sprocket.
And also make sure that there are no sharp edges anywhere on the bike.

Sports bikes for adults

If it is easy enough to choose a sample for infrequent movement around the city (it is enough to feel comfortable), then for the most thorough training in sports, separate types of bicycles are presented: Their task is to guarantee the greatest pace of movement on a well–paved highway. Sports and tourist, or touring. They are somewhat similar to highway ones (for example, they have tick-type brakes), but differ in significant stability. Cross-country. If you need to pick up an adult mountain bike, concentrate your interest on these modifications and their main properties: the ease of the system in terms of comparison with other varieties; a straight or barely arched steering wheel; 26-inch (wheel diameter size 26), have the most rigid tires with a supplied brake system; the presence of a shock absorber on the driving fork, and in certain varieties and on the rear tire. Having explained the type of bicycles for adults that will suit you, you need to carefully focus on certain properties of modifications, since even in one line the characteristics can vary greatly due to specific goals and the frequency of use of the bike, as well as other aspects.

Types of bicycles

SUVs ― mountain, fatbike, two-suspension;
sports ― road, track, cyclocross, cutting, for freestyle and trial;
for asphalt driving ― urban, hybrid, touring, folding.
According to the classification, the models are divided into women’s and children’s, trucks and trailers, tandems, unicycles, choppers and cruisers, electric bicycles.

Each of these types assumes design features corresponding to the functional purpose of the model. For example:

the tandem seat is designed for two people;
cruisers for long walks are equipped with a wide comfortable saddle;
mountain SUVs have a massive frame and wide tires with toothy treads;
the designs of women’s and children’s bicycles take into account the physiological characteristics of riders.
